Protesters across Bulgaria Demand Strict and Effective Punishment for Animal Abusers

Citizens gathered at a protest in front of the Court House in Sofia, demanding effective and stricter punishments for people who have committed violence against animals. “We know from experience that some things do not happen easily in Bulgaria. Writing on social media obviously won’t do. This is why we are here to demand effective punishments for animal abusers, if necessary with changes in legislation,” one of the protesters told BTA.
The protest was organized on social media, and those participating also insisted on the establishment of a well-functioning animal police. They said that their protest actions will continue.
The cases of mistreatment of animals in the country are becoming more frequent, protesters said. As an example, they give the publicly known case of Zahari Shulev, accused of particularly cruel violence against the dog Mecho.
Similar protest actions are planned in other cities of the country, including Lovech and Kazanlak.
